What Actually Happens in a Pack-Out

A pack-out is the day a crew of people you have never met boxes up everything you own and drives away with it. Nobody enjoys watching it. It is considerably easier if you know the order it happens in, so here is the whole sequence.

1. The walkthrough

Before anything is touched, someone walks the property with you and agrees the scope: which rooms, what comes out, what stays, and anything that needs handling differently. This is the moment to point out the things that matter, the ones that are fragile, and anything you want kept back.

Say if there is something you need access to while it is in storage. It is easy to flag now and a nuisance later.

2. Photographed and inventoried where it stands

Every item is photographed in place and written down, with its condition noted, before it moves. This is the part that protects you.

It also takes longer than people expect, and that is the right trade. A crew that gets straight to loading is saving its own time at your expense.

3. Wrapped, padded and banded

Furniture is blanket-wrapped, then plastic-wrapped over the blanket, then banded. Panels and anything flat get padded and taped. Small items are boxed and the boxes are labelled against the inventory, so a box is not an anonymous box.

The wrapping is not just for the drive. It is for the weeks in storage afterwards.

4. Out and loaded

Floors and doorways get protection down first. Then everything goes out and onto the truck in an order that means it can come off in a sensible one later.

5. Cleaned and deodorized

At our facility, not in a property that is still wet or still smells of smoke. Different materials get different methods, and textiles get their own.

6. Stored

Your belongings stay together, inventoried, for as long as the repair takes. That is usually longer than anyone predicts at the start. Ours are at 11915 NE 56th Circle in Vancouver, and you are entitled to know the address of wherever yours are.

7. Pack-back

When the property is ready, everything comes back and goes where it was. This is where using the same crew both ways matters: they are putting things back in rooms they emptied themselves, working from the inventory and the photographs they took.

A different crew, working from a list, has to ask you about every third item.

What to do before the day

  • Set aside what you need. Medication, documents, chargers, work equipment, a few weeks of clothes. Anything you will want before the job ends should not go on the truck.
  • Flag the irreplaceable things. Not the expensive ones, the ones you would be upset about. They are not always the same items and a crew cannot guess.
  • Say what stays. If something is not coming out, make sure it is on the scope as staying.
  • Plan for pets and parking. A truck needs somewhere to sit and doors get propped open for hours.

How ours runs

CCR is family-run, based in Vancouver, Washington, and it is our own crew from the walkthrough to the day it goes back. Never subcontracted. See what we handle or where we work.
